National Dog Day 2024

My heart has celebrated dogs since I was 5 years old.  I won't mention what year that was but my first love was Lassie.

Susan of Quilt Fabrication is celebrating National Dog Day 2024 on Monday, August 26 with a linky party.  You'll want to visit there to see who else is celebrating their dogs this year.

quiltfabrication.com

It took many years before I was able to share my life with my own dogs.  I've had dogs since 1986.  I fell in love with the Shetland Sheepdog (sheltie) breed.  Four shelties have shared their life with me..... Kilty, Kirby, Kody and now Kelsey.  We also have Rosie, who is our dachshund-pom mix rescued from a local shelter.  This pic of Kelsey and Rosie is 5 years old and now I lose track of their ages, so I have to ask the vet their age every year.

A few years back I came across a fabulous and fun dog panel.  I created designs around all the blocks and made this quilt,  just for me.  It is one of my favs. I also did all the machine quilting.  I stippled behind all the dogs so they poofed out.  It seems I started this quilt in 2021 and finished in 2022.  It measures 64 x 72.  My first posts about this project can be found  HERE

I had an awful time trying to find photos of this quilt on my computer.  Here are a bunch of new photos taken at church recently.

I LOVE all dogs and I love my doggie quilt!

I'm joining these lovely linky parties this week.  Besure to visit them to see what other creative quilters are sharing.

London Calling cont.....

I'm caught up with piecing the London Calling blocks 12, 13 & 14.  This is a block of month project created by Gudrun of gequiltdesigns.com.  She writes the pattern and demonstrates cutting and sewing each in the accompanying video.  You will find the project available for purchase  HERE .

Block 12 represents Trafalgar Square.....

Block 13 is Liberty Flowers .....

Block 14 represents Parks and Gardens....

Only a few months until Our mystery will be revealed and assembled.  I already have a great british print fabric for the backing.  I love the brits so had to take part in this project.

During July I also joined in a Christmas in July cross stitch along presented by Fat Quarter Shop.  I've done so little cross stitch in my lifetime and its been years but ...........  I was encouraged to start up again to occupy my hands in the evening.  This is a free project you will find   HERE .

This lovely stitchery measures only 6 inches.  I am planning to add some rounds of christmas fabric and make it into a small quilt to hang on the 12 inch table top hanger.

Help! How Do I Quilt It challenge

This is a free motion quilting challenge presented by Angela Walters of Quilting Is My Therapy. It is just wrapping up. The feather border quilting will be showcased on Angela's  you.tube channel on Tuesday. The videos will remain for you to watch anytime.

BUT ..... it's not too late to start, right?   Old habits die hard and since I prefer to start quilting near the middle of the quilt, I waited until the end.  I quilt on a Janome mid arm sit-down machine. In this challenge, Angela started the lessons on the outside of the quilt and worked inward.  I was okay with waiting until the end since I "JUST"  got my quilt sandwich pin basted this week!  But I watched the video demos each week and I'm anxious to begin.  So fun!

It took me  FOREVER  to decide on additional borders  for the center panel to bring it to queen size.  I used an accuquilt die to cut the half rectangle triangles.  Turns out all my border blocks finished  1/4" smaller than originally needed.  So ........  back to EQ  to work in some spacing borders and re-calculate number of pieced blocks to make everything fit.  I was SO EXCITED when assembling the pieced border fit perfectly all around !!

It measures 97 x 104 before quilting.  I had to pin baste it on tables at the church.  I could have used more pins but I hope there is enough to hold it together. The quilt center and feather border are printed panels; then I added the last 5 borders.  Originally I was planning a ribbon border design but changed it to this half rectangle block design.  I know it will be a blast to quilt once I get past the center bulk.

Dresden Toppers

I did not piece these toppers except for making 3 of the center circles.  A dear friend made the toppers but did not get the chance to finish them.  She made them for some specific family members.  I did the machine quilting so they would be finished and giftable.

I free motion quilted them using assorted shades of Glide threads and Bottom Line thread in the bobbin except for the one with the green back which used a matching thread.  I quilted them with an assortment of ruler/templates and tried to make them each unique.  They each measure 32 inches point to point.

There are 4 of them.  I am sharing a pic of front and back so you can see the quilting better.
