Scrappy X's and O's -

I've spent the last few days trying to re-sort my scrap bins & baskets into constructive projects.  I have a bit more control now and the work table has a usable surface again.

I have been cutting my leftover bits into usable pre-cut pieces; whatever size I could get from each piece.  One of the sizes was a basket of 2-1/2 inch squares  and a basket of 2-1/2 inch half square triangles.  Then I came across this photo on the internet showing a way to use all these scrappy pieces, and no background was necessary.  It was a great solution.  I love the definitive lines of light and dark.

'Y2K Blocks 4'
***Update:  this site showed up in my feed and must be where I first got the idea for this scrappy arrangement:   WIP Wednesday: All Y2K Wedding Rings Blocks Are Finished! (quiltpiecer.blogspot.com) *** ;  give credit where credit is due   (11-18-2021)

So today I planned to just sew up the pairs, so I could store the basket; then work on something else needed soon for the upcoming holidays.  Turns out,  I kept sewing these units until I had them worked as far as they would stretch.  There are some hst still in the bin,  but they are dark shades.  I'll need to accumulate some light ones to pair them up.

Anyway,  I spent all my sewing time today, sewing these units up and turning them into blocks.  I have  8 blocks  done so far !  Each block is not too attractive up close,  but when you put them all together,  from a distance,  I think they look marvelous !!!  8 blocks doesn't sound like alot , but since each block has 25 units,  that makes for 200 units used today.
Someone said this block was called X's and O's,  so I'll call it that, for now.

  1. Great use of your 2 1/2" scraps. Your X's and O's blocks are very inspiring. I am in the same process organizing my scraps into useble pieces because I am in need to find my table space.

  4. I really like this! I have put all my 2 1/2 inch squares in bags to sell at my booth. I know I could have made many things with them yet, but I already have so many projects to work on.

  7. I thought I recognized those blocks. The Y2K blocks pictured are ones that I've been working on for the past few weeks with 3" charms I received from a 2001 swap. The actual name of the block is Wedding Rings. It's a fun and easy block and great for scraps.

  13. What a great way to put a dent into your 2.5" scraps -- squares and HST. At some point I may actually try this one. Right now I'm making 16 patches with my 2.5" squares. My guild is collecting them. I like the fact that I won't have to finish them but they still go somewhere they will be used.
