Open Spaces Challenge

This project is a free motion quilting challenge by Angela Walters from last year.  I bought the panel and added the extra border strips which was also printed as a panel.  The challenge was to expand your experience with large background or open spaces.  The videos are free.  You can get the supplies at

LG Negative Spaces Challenge Panel | Quilting Is My Therapy

So quilting large open spaces is not my area of excellence.  I seem to be mostly a block by block quilter. I am most comfortable letting shapes guide my quilting design.  I forced myself into each quilting session.  I wanted to make each area different, so I even did free motion designs that I had avoided in the past due to lack of confidence.

I am fine with how it turned out.  Actually, I'm not thrilled about the quilt colors or design of the panel, but wanted to experience the challenge.  Maybe it will appeal to the younger set?  Most of my quilts are made just for the joy of the process and are happily passed on when finished.

This quilt has very detailed stitching, so many close up photos were necessary.  I neglected to photo the back but it is a wide back of red, white & blue.  It finished at 64 x 74.

Now for Round 6 of the Stay at Home Round Robin project.  You will find the prompt for Round 6 offered by AnjaQuilts .   She said ' quilters creative choice'; which is a great prompt at this stage in our projects.

I felt my round 5 looked unfinished,  so I complicated my round 6 by making the sides different from the top and bottom.  In addition,  I had specific colors on each wing of the geese  BUT  as I sewed them,  my geese were upside down to add the wings.  This made all my colors in the wrong place.  I did  ALOT of unstitching on this round!  My project now measures 51 x 60.

I declare my project STILL looks unfinished, so I am determined to work up a Round 7 with the remaining pieces of this fabric collection.

I'm joining Anja's linky HERE  and my weekly parties.  Please be sure to visit them to see what other creative quilters are sharing.

A Quilters Cove - Green Gables-Block 2

It's time to share my neighborhood house constructed in greens for February's RSC color as hosted by Angela of Soscrappy.

This block will measure 9" x 10-1/2" when sewn into the quilt.  I used a blanket stitch around most of the elements and a straight stitch on the small pieces.  I love the flowering trees which accent the greens so nicely.  Hmmm, no one can enter the house until I remember to install the door handle!

Andree of Quilting & Learning - What a Combo! hosts a linky party on the last Saturday of each month to share our housing projects.  Plus, you can find all the links related to our housing project on "A Quilters Cove" page listed at the top HERE .

2026 SAHRR - Round 5

The prompt for Round 5 of this years' Stay at Home Round Robin is offered by Gail over at QuiltingGail.com    Round #5 for the 2026 SAHRR | Quilting Gail.  Gail suggested using 2 colors in this round.  You could use 2 color families plus background, which is what I did because I am working from a half yard bundle collection which now consists of leftover pieces.

I wanted to make this quilt rectangular, so my version of round 5 frames only the top and bottom.  I used the golden yellow family, some blue triangles and some background triangles.  I also needed to add a coping strip to make my border strip fit.  This quilt now measures 48 x 56.  My final round will have to be a 4 inch or 8 inch border.

I'm linking up with Gail HERE  where you can see all the other round robin creations   AND

Green Bricks Bear Hug 26-03

I've been on the run every day this week with only stolen time in the sewing room.  Since I haven't accomplished anything from the green scrap bin this month, I grabbed partial jelly strips and made some rail fence blocks.  I sewed them into pinwheels and had enough for a very large 26 inch little bear hug quilt # 03. I won't get it finished today BUT I am determined to finish it this week.

2026 SAHRR - Round 4

Wendy at Pieceful Thoughts of My Quilting Life is hosting the prompt for Round 4 of the 2026 Stay at Home Round Robin. This week the prompt involves curves.  It could be curves in a block or curved applique or even curves in the fabric design.

I definitely put alot of work into this round.  I didn't want dresdens or drunkards path blocks because they would be too large for my overall plan,  plus I was working with measurements now of 42 inches on each side.

The fabrics are richer than they appear in this indoor photo.  I made the arch by using interfacing; leaving the bottom long edge open, turning right side out and topstitching with a blanket stitch onto  a 2-1/2 inch background strip which was then added to the center as one border strip each side.  I also took this time to top stitch down all the fusible flowers and butterflies.  I used a navy shade of Glide thread for all the top stitching.  My piece now measures 46 inches square.  I will need to choose one of the next 2 prompts to turn this quilt into a rectangle.

Along with Wendy of Pieceful Thoughts, I'm also joining these lovely linky parties this week.  Please be sure to visit them to see what other creative quilters are sharing.

Placemat Challenge 26-02,3,4

So I may be sharing my placemat finishes in bunches.  In honor of SoScrappy RSC blues for last month, I finished this scrappy spiral placemat.

and the back ............

Connie at Freemotion By The River is also having a monthly color challenge and link-up.  This month is reds. I wanted to refresh my memory for making the delectable mountains block, so I used that method for my challenge.  I finished binding them yesterday and today they will be used for a hostess gift.

26 SAHRR - Round 3

I am participating in the 2026 Stay at Home Round Robin which is an annual event beginning every January.  You can find all the details at  Round #2 for the 2026 SAHRR | Quilting Gail

This week is round 3. I had to dig deep into the creative brain cell to think of something this time.  After a few sleeps and some trials in EQ,  I decided to add a border to create an open area for quilting and a place to rest your eye.  Animals was the challenge this week I tried to stay with the floral theme of the fabrics and made some butterfly appliques.

I pieced a 4 inch border with background fabric, added a 1 inch trim of color then put a butterfly in the 4 corners.  They are fused but I still need to blanket stitch them down.

I also made 8 more smaller butterflies to try in the remaining open areas of this border.  I pinned 2 in place on one side of the border just to see if it would work.  If I envision these 8 butterflies going around the border,  will it be TOO MUCH ?   I think it will be too much but what do YOU THINK?

Round 2 on my 2026 SAHRR is ready.  Link up this week is at

Be sure to visit there to see the creations from all the participants.

Here is my project so far, the  round 2 prompt is "Make It A Double".  This is my interpretation which is also defined by the fabric collection I am working with and how complicated/or not, I want to put into the round.  And size does matter as I'm trying to avoid making a queen size quilt this time.  I also get lots of help from EQ8 and Accuquilt cubes.

A Quilters Cove - January House Blues II

So January is finished and it's time to share our first house.  I made mine in blues to correspond with Angela's Rainbow Scrap Challenge. I added charming little elements to my first house.  I top stitched them all down raw edge style.  The background piece has a layer of  thin interfacing  This type of designing is a bit beyond my artistic talent.  I am enjoying the challenge for a change of methods. My project will showcase different house designs in different size blocks.  Why keep it simple ?

During my internet travels, I came across this page which offers 6 free house patterns and want to share the link with you, just in case you need more options.

Village Houses: Joybells Ring in Heaven’s Street – OccasionalPiece–Quilt!

Have you made a house block yet?  Andree is our Linky Party hostess.  I hope you will share your creation there so we can all see your awesome designs.  Maybe you will consider following Andree so you can get notice to the linky parties when they are first released.  Here is the link for January

Placemat Challenge 26-01

I have a difficult time resisting small challenges; okay some big challenges too.  Connie at Freemotion By The River is hosting a monthly color challenge.  She announces a color and offers directions for a block.  You are open to make anything with your color; large, small, finished or not.  You can share your creation in the linky party anytime during the month.

I decided to challenge myself with making placemats for gifting this year.  Those quick finishes are satisfying for motivation.  I've started with a placemat in shades of aqua which just happens to be near the top of my 10 favorite colors list!

Methods for making placemats should not need so much tweeking in my advanced quilting stage of life, but alas, it seems sometimes still necessary. I am not accustomed to making single fold binding.  It should have been cut 1/4 inch wider and so it did not turn out perfectly.  I will probably still free motion quilt in the area around the sailboat when the machine is set up for it.

In the meantime, this placemat is 12 x 18.

and here is the back ................ a leftover piece from some wideback yardage I had.

2026 SAHRR - Round 1

When  Brenda announced the criteria for Round 1 of the 2026 Stay At Home Round Robin, I jumped right into EQ for design help.  I made some adjustments and quickly settled on a plan and promptly got to work cutting the units so I could sew it together at our group sew day yesterday.

It came together pretty well and I am happy with the progress,..... so far. I used 4 inch finished blocks. My piece now measures 24 inches square.  I still need to put a nice blanket stitch on that center applique.
