A Quilters Cove - October Tans

Greeting friends !   It's time for October's Quilters Cove block.  I made it in tans with rusty-brown accents.  My Quilters Cove project will extend into next year, mostly because of the smaller accent blocks and surrounding areas in the setting I've planned for.

I have 2 more months of color.  We never run out of colors.  I think I'll be using grays for one month and browns for the other month.  I love browns, it's one of my 10 favorite colors.

If you would like to visit links to posts from previous months, you can visit THIS PAGE.
It also has links to Andree's linky parties that were posted each month.

and ......  here is my block for October.  I've decided that less detail is okay and I can fill in any bare-looking areas when the top is together.

Log Cabin 1 - a flimsy

I've been playing with a new-to-me template by Creative Grids for the 6 inch log cabin block. The process went very well but I'm thinking this mix of colors is not working it.  Will have to think more about plan # 2.  This flimsy is 24 inch square and I will quilt it up into a lil bear hug quilt to wrap around a stuffed animal.  It was fun as I worked out of my 1-1/2 inch string bin.

Heartstrings Donation -# 8 by Valerie Osborne

This string quilt top was one of a box of tops I received, donated thru Heartstrings Group for volunteers to turn into quilts and donate to their local charities.  Most of Valeries tops are baby quilt size. I donate those to The Hope Center which has 3 locations in my area providing medical services for new mothers- to- be.

My camera did not do justice to the lovely purple print which dominated this string quilt.  I used a pretty fleece print on the back and quilted in a circular grid with Glide lavender.

2026 RSC - Granny Squares- Complete

I began making granny square blocks this year following along with the RSC color of the month.  I made 9 blocks.  These blocks are so traditionally adorable but turns out they are not my favorite to make.  Since I had 9 blocks done, it only seemed fitting to make enough for a lap quilt setting.

This week I made 3 more blocks; an aqua, a blue and a green.  This makes 12 blocks so I imported my block photos and played in EQ with possible settings.

Here is my imported block photos in a layout.  I will let this setting simmer just in case I come up with a better idea. I think it needs a final border of a large and pretty print. Suggestions are always welcomed.

A Quilters Cove QAL - Sept Purples

It's time for another Quilters Cove house - purples for September per the RSC color at Soscrappy this month,     All my quilters cove house blocks will be trimmed down to different sizes for the quilt layout . I think I'll need to add more detail on some blocks to fill up empty space. This purple house at 5" x 6"  is set on a smaller lot than some of the others.

RSC Purples - Townhouses

I've not alot to show for this week.  I began by cutting the kit for a very large baby quilt and ended up sewing it together into a flimsy 54 x 66.  It is nicely folded on a hanger and didn't get a photo, so will wait till I get it quilted.

I spent a bit of an afternoon fussing over purple scraps to make up these 2 townhouses.  I'm not thrilled with how they turned out, but they will get put with my collection of paper pieces houses for now.

RSC Purples - a quilt finish

I made this little top during last years' purple month May, 2025.  Here is the original post                     Scrapbox Quilts: Purple Tops Q4K.

Today I took a complete detour from my ongoing projects to quilt this up for a finish.  It measures 38 x 40.  I free motion quilted it with straight lines diagonally crosshatched thru the blocks with Glide Lavender thread,  top and bobbin.  The back is a tula pink print.  I had to add another piece to make it wide enough.  Nice Pellon 80/20 batting.  This one is lightly quilted for cuddly babies.

The colors are much more vibrant than they appear here.  The photo was taken outside but the sun was shining.

RSC Purples for Sept & a new flimsy

This week I made 3 new blocks from the purple scrap bin. Some refer to this block as the 4 Corners block.  I call it my 4 Corners Ohio block.  These blocks take longer to dig and cut for appropriate color scraps than it does to sew them up.  They are so cute at 6" tho.  I especially love the ones that are totally scrappy.  Isn't it funny that you have to actually do these things to determine your preference and style.

I also pulled a couple leftover strips of purple and yellow and made a few 16 patch blocks.

Do you have unusual fabric prints in your stash that you're unsure what to do with? I had this wild psychedelic print that finally said it might flow nicely cut up for a Spring Splash quilt.  Pattern: Spring Splash | Quilting Daily  ( there is a link to the pdf file)  I made one years ago and always had it in my mind to make more.

So I had to cut up a kit for the project to have handy.  Yesterday I went and stitched it together!  Doesn't that always happen, if the units are ready to sew, we can't stop the process.  AND  I've had another pair of fabrics that is not suitable for children's taste, so I cut this one up into another kit!  It can go to a retirement home when it's finished.

Here is the 'wild' one - I'm calling it Spring Splash on Steroids.  I still have some of this fabric left, I may put it in a halloween quilt. The background fabric looks white but it is actually a celery green batik.  My photos were taken indoors.

RSC September - Granny Squares in Purples

This is all I've got to show for progress this week. I've been on the run every day.  It's not my favorite way to spend retirement.  Next week is not looking much better.  It's not as enjoyable to spend stolen moments in your sewing studio.

So, I got a couple hours of machine quilting time on the oversize Vintage Queen.  These 2 lovely granny squares made with purples were created over 3 days time.  I do think these are my favorites of the batch so far.  I have 9 granny square blocks made now.  I don't enjoy making these BUT I do think I should make 3 more - which may round out 12 blocks for a nice quilt.

Here is the rest of the collection so far .....

What color/s should my last 3 blocks be ???

A Quilters Cove QAL - August Yellow

It's time for another Quilters Cove house - yellows for August per the RSC color at Soscrappy this month,   I love this little house but wish I made the door narrower.  All my quilters cove house blocks will be trimmed down to different sizes for the quilt layout . I think I'll need to add more detail on some blocks to fill up empty space.

I also quilted up the latest Lil Bear Hug quilt top made of purple and yellow potato chips a couple weeks ago.  I quilted around in a circle at 2 inches apart.
