Tuesday Archives # 9 - Boys and BOM's

Tuesday Archives is a program where you dredge up an old post that was retired to the shelf, kind of like re-cycling a good thing.  This week is all about boys or block of months which are a WIP or Finished. Finished is a less common attribute in my home.

The lattice garden block of the month was offered a couple years ago as a free bom on jeanneraecrafts.  I worked it up in EQ, changed the alternate pieced block in the setting and set about collecting black and whites and white and blacks, and an awesome yellow for splash. I still have it on my 'must do' list.  I really want to make it, it's just that other projects keep pushing their way in.

Here are two blocks waiting for more flowers to join them.

I actually made two other blocks too. They were my first two blocks.  I discovered the flowers were placed incorrectly, so I had to make these two above.  The first two blocks will be put into a complimentary runner.  You can read all about this project in the original post  HERE  .

I'm linking up with Val's Quilting Studio where you can discover lots of other archival posts.

GFG Baby Pink Nap Quilts

Today I am sharing the pink version of the gfg baby quilts.  They are very similar to the blue ones, except I just love the dusty rose shade of pink border and the boldness of royal blue flange.

Here is one for a close-up view

I have one still to quilt up and 3 to bind before I can move on to other projects.  I'm linking up with Kelly at My Quilt Infatuation  where you will find lots of other creative quilters sharing their works.

Tuesday Archives # 8 - Birthdays & Borders

It's Tuesday Archives Day -- the day we re-visit old posts.  This week it's birthdays and borders. I want to share my posts about the sofa quilt I made for DH.  He takes it with a short nap every day. It grew from a bucket list program that we take part in over at Cbees yahoo group.  Every month a different skill is drawn from a bucket and everyone does with it whatever they want to.  I used some of the skills and created a panel from those techniques.

This is the center panel.  It started with curved strippy borders, some applique would be added to the center later.  HERE  is the post which explains the process I used to make this panel.

After several months, this is the finished quilt.  I've learned that my favorite quilts are ones that didn't begin with a specific plan and decisions were made in stages.

GFG Baby Blue Nap Quilts

Yep, still workin on that piece of grandmothers flower garden fabric.  I sure got some mileage out of it.  I've been building borders around the last four pieces and they are becoming nap size quilts. I need to have one totally finished for a donation at a club dinner meeting tomorrow.

Okay, this is an unusual way to photo 2 small quilts.  I thought about stitching black collars on the puppies, but the fleece backing is light and I didn't want it to show through. I thought about drawing the collars on with fabric pen,  still on the fence with that idea.

Here is a close-up of one.  I hope to get it quilted tomorrow.  The bindings are all ready too.

Stay tuned............ next week will showcase the pink versions, maybe they'll be quilted too. LOL  I'm linking up with Judy at Patchwork Times where you can see what other creative quilters are working on.

Scraphappy Saturday - Purples 2

This is the block I chose for the purple row in the row quilt.

and here is an assembly of the row quilt progress so far

It's so liberating to choose a block each month based on your mood at the time. LOL  I may have to make a row quilt every year.

I ended my purple scraps by working up these 8 wonky log cabin blocks.  After I finished I realized what I didn't like about them  --  the very light pieces are too distracting!  I will try to remember to stay with medium and dark tones next time.

I'm linking up with Angela at Soscrappy for the RSC14 challenge where you can see what everyone else is making with their purple scraps this month.

Tuesday Archives #7 - Baskets & Bunnies

It's Tuesday again and time to fetch a vintage post off the shelf for recycling.  This week it's baskets & bunnies.  I can recall only one item I might have posted about baskets.  It's not really that old which is probably why I remember it.  LOL

I made this 12" basket block for the Scrap Scramble bom on the Carol Doak List.  I fussed over which fabrics to use and thought it came out really pretty.  It is paper pieced, one of my favorite techniques.

GFG Baby Quilts 1- 4

Here are the first 4 baby quilts made from a small bundle of grandmothers flower garden printed fabric.  I did alot of machine quilting on them; and of course, they are backed with cuddly fleece.

I have four more smaller pieces to make up.  I'm building borders around them to bring them up to infant/car carrier size.  I've really gotten good mileage from this piece of fabric, but I'll be glad to get it all used up and move on.

Scraphappy Saturday - Purples 1

I opted to make the kaleidoscope blocks first, since I didn't have alot of time.  I didn't think I had alot of purples, but actually I have enough scraps, just not much variety.  I spent some time gathering and sorting them out.

Success with the join in the center is always hit or miss for me, mostly miss.  I am growing weary of these blocks already.  Their finished size is also hit or miss. LOL My camera has a problem photographing purples - they always look like blues.  The royal blue strip here is actually a deep purple.  Oh dear, I don't mean to sound like alot of whinning but .........

I thought about trying out a 6-wedge kaleidoscope with the 60 degree ruler, but there might be a problem integrating the 8-wedge and 6-wedge blocks into the same quilt. I'm linking up with Angela at Soscrappy for the RSC14 weekly challenge.

Next up, need to decide on a block for the row quilt.  Thanks for stopping by.

A 20th Century Churn Dash

This quilt was made by our friends' grandmother way back when.  They found it with 3 other large quilt tops stitched in the early 1900's.  One is a crazy quilt, two are made with scrappy hourglass blocks. They were hand pieced.

This quilt was sandwiched and hand quilted, so I offered to bind it for them.  I chose a binding to match the backing, but maybe I should have chosen another color.  I've spent several evenings stitching it down.  It is made with fabrics from the 30's & 40's and I see many shirtings for the background pieces. In fact, I have to wonder if the rest of the churn dash pieces are also from clothing.  Some of the sashing is an old shade of red or orange covered with tiny yellow flowers.

Now it is finished so I can return it.  I  am linking up with Kelly at My Quilt Infatuation where you will discover lots of other inspirational projects in the works.

Tuesday Archives #6 - Bindings & Birds

Greetings.  I've done nothing on birds, but I can share a special tale on binding.  Have you ever disliked the effect of a binding color and removed it after the project had been totally finished?

This is the little quilt that got all the attention.................... the brightness of the binding just overpowered it for me.

and so I did unstitch it and replace with a green that would fade into the background. I'm not super crazy about this version either, but it was finished. I should have gone darker.  Are you as picky as me about the final effect of your bindings?

You can read that post from way back in November of 2012  HERE . I'm linking up with Val's Quilting Studio HERE where you will find lots of other great posts re-surfacing for sharing.

GFG Baby Quilt 5

I'm working up this piece of grandmothers flower garden fabric until it's all gone.  I've got 4 infant baby quilts to make out of the last piece.  I cut it into 4 'almost' rectangle pieces.  Now I'm workin borders around to get them up to size.  This is the first one on my design wall today.

GFG Baby Quilt 2

I have been working on this little sidekick to the GFG Baby Quilt I shared last week.  I like to gift a 2 piece set for new babies - one that is large enough to carry through toddler life and a smaller one, about 30" square,  handy to toss over baby carriers, strollers or car seats.

and here is the sidekick... it would have been finished but I made a bad choice when quilting the white areas behind the flowers  and  so  I must put the seam ripper into overtime work.  Better hurry, this set is due for next Saturday.

and  here is the back ....... a soft and pretty fleece;  I had an ugly piece of ombre which served as a wonderful binding. I suppose there is a service for everything.

Tuesday Archives #5 - Backs & Batiks

Today is tuesday archives day - where we dredge (is it dredge or drudge?) up wonderful old posts sitting in the archives; viewed once, then put away on the shelf.  What a nifty idea in recycling.

The theme today is backs and batiks.  I do recall a nice post way back on July 02, 2011 where I shared the back of a string quilt I made.  You will find the post and more photos of the string quilt  HERE .

I don't work with batiks much, but I do have a special quilter friend who loves them.  I made her one of those adorable iron caddys from a piece of batik.  You can read about that project HERE.
