Hidden Log Cabin After Christmas QAL

This quilt along is taking place on one of my favorite I.O. quilting groups .... Stashbusters.  We will work on this project together, using stash and putting our own spin on it.  This idea is a spin-off from a youtube video  by Moonkin Stitchery

(10806) Hidden Log Cabin | Jelly Roll Quilt Pattern | Layer Cake Quilt Pattern | Log Cabin Quilt Pattern - YouTube

Of course, I couldn't resist cutting fabric in preparation for the quilt along.  It took me 3 afternoons.  I cut from a layer cake for the prints and half yard cuts for the cream backgrounds.  I want to make a twin, so I need at least 80 blocks.  I prepped the entire layer cake which made for 96 blocks, so I will have extra.  The extra blocks could go on the back or into a topper.... so many options.  I used my stripology rulers for the strip cutting and cross cut units which was very efficient and little waste.

So this is all I have to share this week ....................

This is stacks of 8 each

These pieces are the background/light side

Calico Gold 3 YD Quilt

This little quilt was designed from a photo of a 3 yard quilt.  It finished at 52 x 62.  The black and gold calico fabric didn't photo very well.  It is much prettier than in the pic.  I started this project during a kit-making marathon in December of 2022?  I carried it with me as a back-up to sew days every month.  I've spent the past week free motion / ruler quilting it with overlapping circles.  I used Military Gold Glide thread on the top and Omni gold thread in the bobbin.

Here is a close up of the quilting .................

I used this lovely wide backing fabric from Quilted Twins which worked ever so well with the burgandy fabric on the front   Red Queen's Garden: Queen's Garden by MDG - 108 Wide Backing

Peace on Earth

I made 2 Peace on Earth tops, similar but each very scrappy.  This first one is now complete with free motion quilting and a sleeve on back for hanging.  It finished at 30 x 37.  I used 2 glide threads on the top, a medium gray and a navy in the black fabric so I could see where I stitched.  I used a forest green in the bobbin to match the fabric on back.

Peace on Earth

I have been working on christmas items these past few weeks.  I fell in love with an item in the Connecting Threads catalog.  It burned in my mind until I had to make one.  What was I thinking...lots of piecing and lots of applique.  I also work under the theory that if you're gonna make one,  it's just as quick to make two at the same time.  I have the top to the first one ready to sandwich and quilt and the second top is waiting for the trees.  It is fusible applique. I think I will quilt with silver thread which will sparkle in the black background.  I will stitch it down & quilt at the same time.  My letters are a tad too big but I love it anyway.  Of course, one is for me and I will gift one.

Christmas Candle Mat

I got out the christmas fabrics... progress seems very slow.  Today I have this small octagon candle mat to share.  It finished at 18 inches.  I created it from a photo on the internet.  If I made another one, it will definitely be larger at 24 inches.  It was a bit of a challenge trying to get the striped portion to be the same width as the larger corner triangle sections.

Swirling Star Christmas Toppers

I've started some christmas sewing.  This is messy business.  This week I made these two toppers.  They are from the Swirling Star pattern designed by Krista Moser.  You can get your own free pattern  HERE  .

They finish at 24 inches hexagon shape.  I used some gorgeous fabrics with a gold metallic accent.

Naturally I quilted them with Military Gold Glide thread and a dark green glide thread in the bobbin.  I free motion quilted them, with and without rulers. Here is the view from the backs.

Holly Jolly Weeks 3& 4 and Star of Wonder

I have been drawn to Fat Quarter Shop lately and their temptations with stitch alongs and precuts.  I wasn't interested in precuts in the past but this quilt along has demonstrated how easy it is to work with 5 & 10 inch units plus the variety of prints in a collection is always fun.

This past week I stitched up week 3 and 4 of  Holly Jolly Christmas.

I also quilted up my Star of Wonder topper.  It measures 48 inches point to point.  I used fleece on the back. I thought of doing a free motion loops and snowflakes but it wasnt happy being moved about in all those directions and not stitching nicely, so I ended up using the walking foot.  I would have done better quilting it on my sit down machine but there is a queen size project tying up that area right now.

Holly Jolly Bar Quilt Along

I have joined in with the Holly Jolly Bar quilt along.  It is a free quilt along but you will need the Holly Jolly Bar book which is only $10.00.  You can read all about it   HERE

Here are my blocks for weeks 1 and 2.  I must admit I am not fast at picking fabrics from a collection to make it scrappy.  I think I like it so far.  This is a project I shouldn't have started because I have so many other ones happening.

Sulky Village - finished

I finished off Sulky Village this week. I wrote about it earlier  HERE  .  I just couldn't settle on the proportions of 30 x 48 with the letters attached at the bottom.  So, I removed that bit and used it for the handing sleeve on the back. The top was made waaayyy back in 2004 when I didn't have a stash variety of prints or colors.  It is entirely paper pieced back in the day when I was just beginning my quilting journey.  The hanging rod is only 24inches, so it's a bit gathered at the top when hung this way.

I free motion quilt on a Janome Versa 18 sit down.  I opted to stitch an allover design looking like water waves for a quick finish.  I used Superior bottom line thread in the top so it wouldn't show up too much.  It finished about 30 x 40 now.   I am SO SO ready to get into my box of christmas fabrics !!

Here is a pile of close up pics.  There is lots of detail in those little pieces of fabric.
