I am participating in the 2026 Stay at Home Round Robin which is an annual event beginning every January. You can find all the details at Round #2 for the 2026 SAHRR | Quilting Gail
This week is round 3. I had to dig deep into the creative brain cell to think of something this time. After a few sleeps and some trials in EQ, I decided to add a border to create an open area for quilting and a place to rest your eye. Animals was the challenge this week I tried to stay with the floral theme of the fabrics and made some butterfly appliques.
I pieced a 4 inch border with background fabric, added a 1 inch trim of color then put a butterfly in the 4 corners. They are fused but I still need to blanket stitch them down.
I also made 8 more smaller butterflies to try in the remaining open areas of this border. I pinned 2 in place on one side of the border just to see if it would work. If I envision these 8 butterflies going around the border, will it be TOO MUCH ? I think it will be too much but what do YOU THINK?
I'm linking up with The Darling Dogwood and these lovely linky parties this week. Please be sure to visit them to see what other creative quilters are sharing.

This is fun! The outside border with its scallops/indents are a lovely frame for your four butterflies and a clever use of the animal-block theme. If you think it is a bit too much, you are probably right. I find that often my first impulse is the right direction. But I like the *idea* of it, so I'll be interested to see what others say.
ReplyDeleteI personally like how it looks with just the four corner butterflies, Kat. Your central block is so pretty...nice choice for this SAHRR. Hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteI love your butterfly border, Kat! You did a great job on it!
ReplyDeleteI love your butterflies, Kat - what a good idea for this border! You're asking a hard question - I hate tough decisions, lol! I guess I liked the first picture the best, with just the four butterflies in the corners. Whatever you decide, it's going to be very pretty!
ReplyDeleteI could go either way with the extra butterflies; my suggestion is to wait and see how busy the next prompt makes the quilt and decide then whether you want plainer or more butterflied. So far it's looking good.
ReplyDeleteIt’s beautiful no matter how many butterflies you use!
ReplyDeleteYour butterflies are a nice addition to your design.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt, Kat. Great idea to add butterflies. That is a hard decision. I love both, but I also agree with Claire to wait for the next prompts to see how busy it will be. Whatever you decide, it's a beauty.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea, I love your little butterflies! Both versions are beautiful, I really like the first one, but I'm sure the future will tell you which one to choose ;) Thank you sharing your inspiring project and linking up.
ReplyDeleteThose butterflies are a nice touch to your quilt! They work well!
ReplyDeleteWow! really amazing! Colors go so well across rounds. Great design and additions!
ReplyDeleteIt's coming along very nicely. Perhaps you can add some quilting that includes butterflies rather than the appliquéd ones.. Another thought would be to just scatter a few across the quilt.. although that might not look as good with the four corner butterflies...
ReplyDeleteThe corner butterflies are perfect, and I think the advice to audition the other butterflies once the other rounds have been added is really smart. I look forward to seeing what you choose!
ReplyDeleteLove those corner butterflies, Kat! Perfect round! Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteThe butterflies are great. I think they would look fine all the way around.
