Never say never certainly applies to me. I always said the Split 9-Patch block was one I didn't want to make. Still, I was encouraged to make this block, and 12 inch scrappy at that!, because of a block drive announced ages ago for the LA fire victims. They asked for 12 inch blocks, all scrappy while still keeping each color family together.
I chose 4 color families and began cutting from my scrap bins. I cut 10 blocks from each color family. My quilter friends helped me sew these blocks together in record time. I thought why on earth did I make 40 blocks; 42 or 48 blocks would make a logical layout.
So this stack of blocks sat and sat until I decided I had too many unassembled flimsys hanging around I took this box of blocks to sew day this week to lay it out and assemble. Creating a pleasing layout from a mix of blocks is not my best skill.
With one color of blocks, I began in the bottom left corner and started laying it out. Imagine my delightful surprise when it just all came together on the first try!! I love it and wouldn't mind making more. 40 blocks came out just right ........... the columns are balanced and the size is 5 x 8 grid with 12 inch blocks make for a nice twin size 60 x 96 before any borders.
Here is one half of the top, after assembly; looking at it sideways.... it is 48 x 60. This also makes a great quilt design. I could make two of these from the blocks pictured above. Another lesson learned.
