L.R. Wallhanging - finished

I have finished my wallhanging for the living room. Yay!  I am visually drawn to a mix of piecing and applique, especially since I am surrounded by an unyielding supply of bunnies (scraps).  I included both techniques in the wallhanging and I enjoy it's aire of whimsy. 

The log cabin blocks are each 3 inches and made totally from scrap pieces left from the LR sofa quilt. I wish I had the scraps under control now, but another project will have to be planned.

I tried out some satin stitching on a few of the applique pieces. That didnt fare so well and I went back to my blanket stitching. I SITD between the log cabin blocks. I used some lettering on my machine to sign my quilt in the bottom right corner.  Finished.  TA DA .   lol

L.R. Wallhanging - con't

Ooh, the excitement mounts for my latest wallhanging. I have finished stitching the scrappy, little log cabin blocks; sewn them into a border and stitched 2 additional frame borders . It's looking very rustic. I think I'm gonna like it!  Sorry,  no pictures yet.

I hope to get it quilted Thursday and displayed on my wall.  Wish me luck to get it done as I have other projects waiting in the wings, for their turn at five minutes of fame.  LOL

L.R. Wallhanging - WIP

I have been working on a wallhanging for a small empty wall in the living room.  Have I said that applique is not my immediate forte?  I still enjoy the mix of applique shapes and piecing. so I just run with it anyway.  I have been working from a scrap pile created from my L.R. Sofa project. 

This is the center piece. I went "without a plan".  Some pieces are fused and a few are pinned. I will stitch it all down when I get to the quilting process.

Now on to the borders.  I used EQ to audition several border treatments.  I have a huge pile of small, odd-shaped scraps, so I went with  little log cabin blocks.  I am pretty sure that there will still be a pile of scrap pieces left over, when this project is finished.  What about the leftover yardage???  LOL

Autumn Strings Quilt

My Autumn Strings quilt is finally finished. This project began way back on August 01, 2011.  It's purpose was to clear out some of the pieces in my scrap bins.  I decided on warm colors of autumn and started trimming strings and tossing them into the project string box.  When the box was full, I started the 36 string blocks. http://scrapboxquilts.blogspot.com/2011/08/string-quilt-2.html  When those blocks were finished, they were neatly trimmed to size and put back in the string box.  This seemed like a good stopping point.

Well, it seems my scrap bins are overstuffed again.  What to do?  I guess I'll have to sew more string blocks to get those bins under control.  So before I could do that, I had to quilt up the batch that was started last summer.  This should have been a quick undertaking.  Ha!  I  have been working on it for the past 2 weeks.  However, I now have a photo to share.  YAY!

Back-to-School Bags

Our UMW  Lydia's Circle group has taken on a missions project to provide school bags to students - some bags are going to the tornado-torn communities in America and some are going to other countries.  I have been cutting and sewing on these bags.  Our group has completed  more than 100 bags!  These ladies are not all sewers.  I used my quilting tools to cut up all the kits for the bags and passed off 30 kits to the ladies to sew.  I finished the rest of the bags. 

This is the most basic of a pattern and was a pleasure to sew up.  The bags were all made from donated fabrics of cordoroy, home dec and denim.  Jane Hewson found the most charming denim and made up the bags on top.

Spring Mini

I finished this mini quilt to add some spring to my environment.  I am not very good at applique, so I just make it how I want to - no stress in that.  Thank you, countryjunktion.com, for sharing this whimsical design.

Twister - Finished!

Yay!  The twister quilt is finished and it was such fun to sew and to quilt.  I dont think any stress evolved while making this project.

This is the front. How could a child not love all the bright colors twisting together?

This is the back. I stitched in the ditch around all the pinwheels. I pre-planned the horizontal and vertical paths which made the quilting proceed quite smoothly.

I wanted to use up the squares that were leftover after cutting my pinwheel blocks, so I worked them into this border.  But!  The twister is so complete without additional borders and next time, those leftover squares are going back into my scrapbox. There are plenty of patterns which call for 3-1/2" squares.

There definitely must be another twister quilt in my future!  It was just a fun time.

Twister - Phase 2

The squares have been cut with the Twist n Stitch template.  When you sew them back together, this is what you get!  Sew how fun is that!  This piece now measures 36" x 45".

I had wanted Phase 2 to be the top all finished.  Well, life got in the way, again.  Plus I decided to use up the leftover pieces by stitching them into a border.  I hope the pieced border will not be overkill.

Twister - Phase 1

The Twister Party is happening all this weekend.  I sewed and pressed and sewed and pressed until I got the top put together.  That was enough for me for one day.  Presently, it measures  54" x  67". 

It will be interesting to see what size it becomes after the re-cutting and sewing into pinwheels.  Stay tuned!

We are having a Twister Party this weekend and you're invited!  It starts on Friday and runs all weekend.  Everyone is selecting their own project size. Here are two examples of twister templates in the marketplace.

This tool is the June Tailor Twist 'n Stitch.  It makes twister pinwheels ranging in size from 3" and up to 10" finished.

This was the first twister tool I purchased at a quilt show.  I got the template that uses charm squares- 5".  I like that the template has those gripper dots to help keep it in place while you cut around it.

RHF Award

In February, DH Ray and I traveled to Long Beach, CA as honored guests of RHF (Retirement Housing Foundation). http://www.rhf.org/RHFCMS/

Ray was presented with  the " Board Member of the Year "award at their annual banquet. Ray has served RHF for 20 years. This picture insert is the article as published in the RHF newsletter magazine.

Ray is the strength and direction in my life.  He is the better half of a whole. I am proud to be able to share this small piece of Ray's contributions of service for humanity.  Ray Scribner, a job well done, good and faithful servant.

Broken Sugar Bowls

I was inspired by this post from Susie at Starwood Quilter where she illustrates her version of a Broken Sugar Bowl block and shares an excerpt  from her grandmothers' diary - 1916!  http://www.starwoodquilter.blogspot.com/2011/10/broken-sugar-bowl-quilt-block.html

Susie's block sparked my imagination of various settings and visions of possible color options - an affliction often common to quilters. I would like to share some of those visions today, along with an EQ7 file.   If you have EQ7 installed on your computer, you can open this file and continue designing with this block and layouts.


I wondered how Susie's version of the Broken Sugar Bowl block would evolve if I swapped the light and dark colors and incorporated them as alternating blocks. I used these two color combinations for the block.

This is a 16-block layout, alternating  with a specific  block coloring and rotation

This is the same 16-block layout, with  different block rotations. I like the illusion of rounded paths in this version.

What a surprise effect you get when you set this block into an on-pointe layout!  Wow! It makes me think of bamboo.

A final thought ....... I can visualize these designs very scrappy - using light and dark fabrics pulled from the same color family.  Very cool! 

Susie, Thank You for re-igniting  my creativity with this very traditional block.  I had been uninspired lately!

Classy Caddy

It's unheard of ............... started   AND  finished .................   all in the same week!  This is such a handy item for sew-in gatherings.  Use  an interesting fabric for the purse.

It totes the Rowenta large size travel iron. It opens to reveal a pressing pad.  What fun is that?!

That's my thrill of the day.  I'm going back to working on my marathon of school bags for the UMW misson now.  :D

Lattice Garden blocks 3 & 4

I have assembled the March and April blocks for the Lattice Garden quilt.  I do not excell with applique techniques, so I've had my little trials to get thru these blocks.

I should have pre-tested the iron. It spit out a spot onto the white background.  How did I know that would happen ? How do I get the stain out?  Have I learned to use a press cloth when using white?  Probably!

Sofa Row Quilt - Finished

It has been forever since I've made a post!  I have been here every day.  Really!  I have not had anything worthwhile to share.

So I pressed on and pressed on until I could stand this project no more!  I am so happy to say this quilt is finished.  I have struggled with this quilt in every effort I took for it.  From a distance, I guess it is attractive enough!  No close inspections, please.

Maybe I could enlist someone to add butterflies, birds or flowerbuds to the ends of those 6 branches?  Right now, I need a break.  lol  It measures 67" x 72".  Was I supposed to have so much fabric leftover?

Bucket List Club for March 2012

Lattice Garden BOM

Here are my January and February blocks.  I am finally using those black/white fat quarters.

Don't you just love the detailed elements you can cut from your fabrics?  I am excited over those little swirls in the center of the flowers.  Fun!

I don't know which flower will be offered for March,  but I hope it will be red or purple or blue or .............  LOL

Happy Valentines Day 2012

Have you heard me say that I get NO RESPECT from my sheltie dog, Kody? He rules the roost. This is my third sheltie and I have to say he cooperates the least,  BUT...........  he's the only sheltie who gives his mom a card for celebrations!  Isn't this card a keeper !!! 

I've heard it said that "Diamonds are a girls' best friend"  but at my stage in life, my answer is always CHOCOLATE !  A few weeks ago, I told dearest Husband, that dark chocolate  with rasberry creme would be my diamond.  I didnt think he took me that seriously, but.............  he delivered ! What a sweetheart!

I'm a lucky valentine today!  I wish for you all to have something to celebrate.

Delectable Mountains - Table Topper

This is a photo of my delectable mountains table topper. It began as a 27" square topper. I angled off four corners so the size doesn't overpower my table. I usually prefer the 18" - 24" size for my table.

The delectable mountains block can appear very dramatic. I think adding the applique softens the drama and makes a nice balance.

This photo is the same topper - rotated 90 degrees and  "appears"  as set on-pointe?  It reminds me of the bear paw block.  I love the look of the bear paw block, but  stressing over the points in all those HST has put me off.  That stress doesnt seem to be an issue when constructing the delectable mountains block. Those points seem to take care of themselves.

February is Delectable Mountains Month- Table Runners

I mentioned the Bucket List Club for a reason. Yep, February is for the Delectable Mountains block. This block is lots of fun to sew and design with.  There are several different construction methods for this block and different sizes. Here are links to a few of my favorite ones:

This page illustrates construction of a finished block 6" by 7-1/2". It also shows lots of design possibilities. I love the scrappy one!  The block begins with  easy 8-1/2" squares.  I used this construction and dimensions for my delectable mountains collection which I'm sharing here.

Here is my delectable mountains table runner.  It measures 12" by 45".

You will notice that I trimmed off the square corners.  This created a bit of a challenge with the binding. I think  I created 60 degree corners.  One corner didn't make for a smooth mitre.  I should have rounded them off.

Naturally, I  played around with this block design in EQ.  Here are a few layouts for table runners. They are all designed with the block dimensions from quiltville.com.  The differences are achieved by how you rotate the blocks.  Examples 1 and 2 use 12 blocks each and examples 3 and 4 use 16 blocks each.

  

Each 8-1/2" square makes 2 blocks, one and another one reversed.  For example, if you wanted to make runner #4, you only need to start with 8 light color blocks and 8 dark color blocks.  Stay tuned for the table topper. It's nearly ready!

Sofa Quilt - Center Panel

I have survived another phase of the Sofa Row Quilt. I have used all the teal I can take. LOL

I used the large Leaves Galore Ruler to cut the curved borders. I also used it to cut the center applique vine, leaves  AND the faux bias tape.  I just fused it on and top-stitched down.

Now I can move on to the flower appliques, echo quilting and the center panel will be complete.

Loose Ends of January

I suppose I should check in.  (grin) . I am keeping so busy, with nothing photo-worthy to share yet.

I have been working on my sofa row quilt.  I sewed the first four panels into sets of two larger panels. I had to piece backings for them, unexpectedly.  Those panels are machine quilted and waiting for final assembly. This is turning out to be one of my larger lap quilts.

I've also gotten the center applique panel ready and waiting for the final step. I made strip sets and turned them into curved borders on the center panel.  I just need to decide the applique now.  The next step is already simmering.  So, itt has reached a stopping point where I can set it aside while another short-term project butts in.

Short-term project:  I am doing mystery block  #64 from www.paperpanache.com.  Linda Worland puts out artistically detailed paper piecing blocks every month or so.   Since this is a mystery, I will refrain from posting a photo of my block until the solution is revealed.  I will adapt the size of the mystery block to accommodate my tabletop wire hanger.

and ....................      I have spent evenings knitting hats for local charity groups.

I know, there is nothing here to light any fire under your seat.  I just wanted to drop in and say hello.

Finally,  I am grateful and humbled for God's grace today.  Thank you, Lord.

Curved Borders Applique Panel

This is the center panel for my sofa quilt. The curved edge was created by making a strata, backing the strata with 'heat and bond', cutting the curves with the  24 inch Leaves Galore Ruler, and fusing the border to the background panel.

Ultimately, there will be applique filling in the center strip. I have some burgandys and gold to use in the applique.  I have some teal thread to top stitch the border strip down.  Do you think I should give the curved edge a finished look with bias tape? 

I am getting anxious to get this quilt put together.

Quilt Barns Window Curtain

I thought I'd share a photo of my window curtain for the laundry room. It is made from a panel of quilt barns designed by Deb Strain. I picked up 3 panels last year while in Shipshewana for my birthday.

Originally, I needed 2 panels to make the valances for my quilting studio. I have the valances ready to hang but the rods are not installed yet. I picked up an extra panel of quilt barns, just in case. I'm glad I used it right away.  The laundry room sets just off my studio area, so the theme carries through.

I fussy-cut around the barn blocks so there would be a specific trim of black and gold. Then I added the barn-red border, the checker border and finally the black sashing. An extra piece was needed on the sides to extend the curtain width. I added a backing and a rod casing.  These blocks are so cheery and colorful.  I really enjoy them.
 
 This project is my first step in "finishing school".

Checking In A New Year

I have been busy. Yes, I have.  I wish I had something interesting to share, but I've just been dabbling in assorted tasks. I finished my Barn Quilt Valances. They are not hanging up yet...waiting for DH to hang the rods. DH is waiting for me to move quilting tables and supplies, so he can hang the rods. 
We have been sorting thru stuff and boxing up items we no longer have an interest in.  I have managed to sneak in some sewing. I have been working on a Quilt Barn Window Curtain....nearly done with that, I think. That rod is already up!  I hope to be able to share a photo soon.

I've also been pulling fabrics for a Judy Hopkins Mystery Quilt.  Our Piecemakers Quilt Guild is conducting a sew-in later this month with this pattern.  I delay with the cutting, since I am likely to change my fabric choices.  I really needed to start another project, sure.  LOL

Dear God,   I didn't think orange went with purple until I saw the sunset you made yesterday.

QST TableMats

Happy Boxing Day!  I have finally finished 3 table mats. Initially, I had 2 odd pieces of this christmas multi print - approx 12" x 20".  I  thought I would challenge myself to use it up right away and not let it creep back into the scrap boxes.  I thought quarter square triangles (QST) would be fun.  Ha!  I made 40 QST blocks, then had to figure out what to do with them. I also had some binding already made up from another project from this print.

I got 2 placemats out of the pieces. Then I had 16 QST left-over. So I chose another print for the rectangle and put the remaining QST around that. This piece is about 25" long. I use quilted mats on end tables and dressers, backs of chairs........they are useful in so many places.

I'm glad to have this project finished. Now, I need to put away supplies so I can see my work tables again.

Blog Revamped

Greetings friends.  I have been doing some re-organization on my blog today. It is a struggle working with the posting editor lately. Should it be difficult to tell photos and text  "where to go"  ?   LOL !  I'm about ready to tell it where to go!

My Favorite Ruler Works Overtime

I have found a new use for one of my favorite rulers. This ruler is from Guidelines http://www.guidelines4quilting.com/.  I really hate to plug merchants since I never receive any gratuity, but this is my second most favorite quilting tool.  I figured you would ask where to get it.  :D

Every 1/4 inch there is a groove. The yellow plastic strip can snap into any increment. It creates a ledge.You just tuck the ruler next to the edge of fabric. It stops at your selected measurement.










My first favorite tool, of course, is ElectricQuilt Software!  EQ has been top of my list for years. I doubt it will ever play second fiddle.    www.electricquilt.com

When I use the guidelines ruler,  I only have to look for the cutting line  ONCE.  Then I just scoot it to the edge of my folded fabric, and cut;  scoot and cut;   scoot and cut.   I especially like that it can guide your cuts to include 1/4 inch increments. 

Now on to my new use for this ruler. I was preparing a small quilt for using "self-faced" binding. I don't know if that is the correct term?  My piece is already quilted. I planned for the backing fabric to extend around to the front and serve as my binding.

I pinned the backing out of the way. I squared up and trimmed the top and batting even. Now I needed my backing to be trimmed even, with just enough to create a double-fold binding. This is where my guidelines ruler found a new use for me.

I set the yellow lever to 3/4 inch, scooted the lever against the trimmed edge of the quilt top and batting. This made it easy to get a nice edge to serve for the binding.

Now I just have to press the binding over once to meet the quilt edge; fold over again onto the quilt top and stitch down.

TA  DA !!    Here is my Christmas Rose Wreath table topper, all finished.  I see the markings from the Crayola washable markers ----  washed out!  Yea.

It is machine quilted with shiny gold rayon thread. I inserted a narrow gold flap between the background and the border.

Mini Christmas Rose Wreath

I finished my tabletop wreath. I did everything by machine. It's not my best job. I regret the chosen fabric for the binding. It is too light. It has a golden metallic sheen to it, but looks washed out.  But, alas, it is finished. I need to move on to other projects that I seem to think I have to do for Christmas!

This little mini measures 13" by 14".  It was paper pieced from fabric scraps. It was machine quilted with a serpentine stitch.  I love the varied effects you can get with a serpentine stitch.  I wish I could say my scrap pile is smaller.

I still have to sandwich and quilt the Christmas Rose Wreath table topper. I did manage to pull the fabrics I will use for the backing and binding.  I'm sure I spent half of my afternoon shopping my stash and deciding on just the right pieces. 

Pumpkin Panache

HAPPY  THANKSGIVING  EVERYONE!  Today, we will reflect on all the things we are thankful for. We have an abundance of blessings. I hope to remember to be "Thanks Giving" every day and carry it into 2012!

Finally, I get to share one of my little projects from October.............And you thought I was being idle!  LOL  This lovely pumpkin was the mystery block from www.paperpanache.com.  Linda Worland is an artist with her paper piecing designs.

I turned it into a  12" x 14"  mini quilt. It is displayed on a table top hanger. It is a great piece to compliment the other festive decor of autumn.

Tomorrow we can bust out the christmas stuff.  I better get those Christmas Rose Wreaths quilted!

2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge

I have made a commitment to participate in the Free Motion Quilting Challenge project in 2012.  I hope  that signing up will make me accountable to do it!  Free Motion Quilting (FMQ) is an important skill to develop if you like to complete the quilting process  to-the-finish..... and I do.    I have avoided using this method for fear I will ruin the quilt top.  It's time to face the fear!

A Time Out

I have been spending much leisure time enjoying the blog hop for the Quiltmakers 100 Blocks blog tour. Issue No. 4 looks to be very promising. I am loving it.  I was greatly disappointed with Issue No. 3. I am glad these block collections are again, on a upswing of superior creativity!

Hippie or Gypsy or Fashion Faux Pas?

Somebody caught the President of our Piecemakers Quilting Guild in a colorful outfit!  Did she find that outfit among all the gorgeous fabric which surrounds her in the photo?  Was she a live player in the 60's?  I think probably so!

This is Kathy B.  I wonder if this picture was caught on video as she held up the LQS?  I hope she will share some of that fine-feelin, feelin-fine fabrics with us!

 She's got those fingers stickin up.....no, no,  she's sayin  PEACE,  but what she really means is   "piece - and quilt " !

If anyone else creates this holiday topper, I'd love to share a photo of it here.  I am still hoping to make this pattern in the miniature 12" size.  It is very close to the top of my to-do list.

Actually, I think tomorrow is the day I am challenged to quilting and finishing my first Christmas Rose Wreath topper.  Wish me luck !!

Mystery Construction Zone

Watch your speed in a construction zone!  HA!

 DH & I have decided on Layout #2.  It has balance and flow (sounds like my medical report) and a pleasant distribution of color.  Now he wants me to speed thru the joining of its pieces, before a big wind might come along and swoosh them out of order!  But really I think he wants the pieces off the dining room table.  LOL

Thank you, everyone, for offering your opinions!  Don't go too far away.....I might need help with the borders. ;D

Twisted Mystery - Possible Solutions

Yikes!  It's been a long week............busy busy busy. I have been sewing alot, just ask DH.  I had nothing to blog about - unfinished pieces everywhere! Now today we are both under the weather.  We're just lounging around, being lazy and trying not to share any germs with the general public.  You're welcome!  lol

I solicited DH to help me unjumble the parts of Carol Doak's Twisted Msytery. Many overly creative members of the group posted photos of their possible solutions - an amazing twist of ideas! So I picked a couple layouts and we assembled them on the table, which is just a little smaller than the project.  DH took photos. Oh what a help that is to be able to observe a layout from a photo.

I had trouble getting the photos placed in order. I'm also having editing issues!  Well,  now I'm SOLICITING OPINIONS.  Which layout is the most appealing?  Please help me decide and leave your comments.  Thanks for helping!

Clue # 6 - Twisted Mystery

Aha. Clue # 6 is finished.  This is the last clue - so they say. LOL

Stay tuned for the layout options! I may need your help and have to solicit votes on the final layout plan.

Clue # 5 - Twisted Mystery

Lots of commitments have kept me away from my Carol Doak mystery project. Today, I was able to get back to it and get clue # 5 sewn. It doesnt look that interesting, but if you could see all the other parts, they really pop, especially with the black background.

Wait until you see clue # 6, it is really colorful!  That is the last clue. I hope to make those blocks tomorrow. Then, I will be looking for some fantastic layout designs with these parts.

Clue # 4 - Twisted Mystery

I have completed Clue #4 and even assembled the parts, as instructed. I think I'll backtrack some of my clues and assemble other blocks, where instructed. Initially, I thought to leave everything separated, so I could take advantage of  any design liberties which occured to me.  LOL  Now that there are so many parts, I'm feeling more comfort in putting them together.

Tis the season here in the Midwest. I have definitely resorted to colors of autumn. I have a few other quilted items which would play very nicely with this project. I hope it gets finished in time. 

As reality sets in, I'll be talking about doing the quilting on this project  'Next' year.  lol

I have been ever so busy here - sewing yes - but no photos to post yet! I'm hoping that tomorrow I can sew clue #4 of the twisted mystery and post a photo of that., which is not very interesting for you all, until you can see it come together as a design.

So many projects going on. How will I ever get caught up?

Clue # 3 - Twisted Mystery

Clue # 3 ... finished already!  I didn't mean to rush, but I have other commitments for the rest of the week!  This clue needed 16 identical blocks. It is the same block pattern as in Clue #1 & 2, just some fabrics are changed and it is half the size - finishing at 3 inches. I enjoyed making it more that I enjoyed making the larger size blocks.

Instructions called for sewing half of the blocks into pairs.  I haven't done that yet. I like to leave my options open. Maybe I'll want to assemble it in a unique way.  I seem to be using autumn colors. I hope we're done in time to display for Thanksgiving.

Clue # 2 - Twisted Mystery

Clue 2 is finished - 4 quarter blocks. Since they are not to be sewn together into a larger block,I suspect they will play into the outermost  corners of the quilt design.  I hope Carol surprises me anyway!

This was the same pattern as Clue 1, but there was a little color change for this block.    I wonder how exotic the next set of blocks will be?  LOL  I do wish I had selected a softer color for the background, but that is the norm for me. ...  always wonder how it would have been with other choices!

Just not enough time and not enough fabric, well okay, just not enough time to find out!  :D
