I learned all my free motion quilting skills from Angela Walters at Quilting Is My Therapy by participating in her semi-annual challenges. She keeps all the video lessons on her you.tube channel where we hope they can live on forever. I have re-visited videos many times.
My "Help-How Do I Quilt It" Challenge was started Summer 2024? I started with her center panel and the first feather border. I thought it too pretty to stop there, surely it should be queen size! So I fussed over more border styles until I finally settled on this pieced ribbon style border. It was alot of work but miraculously fit wonderfully around the quilt without adjustments.
Here is a post when I had the project pin basted; ready for quilting on my "hand-guided" sit-down Janome. If I remember correctly, I started quilting in the center, got about 2/3 of that portion quilted; then took a detour to make christmas projects ! Why does christmas quilting always take you thru January of the new year?!
This quilt spent much time sitting on my sit down machine table while I indulged in the Lil Bear Hugs project. So far, that will be an on-going mission in my life.
Okay, I had to get past this project, so I could move on. I devoted more effort to its finish, all the while telling myself to quit making queen size quilts!!! In Angela's honor, I did quilt it to death, Lots of Glide threads. It finished at 90 x 99 ! It sure feels bigger than that. I forgot to get a photo of the back fabric, it is a wide back I got at my LQS. I love these ones with multiple colors that can compliment so many designs from the tops. The bobbin thread was Bottom Line white/silver. I just took a quick shot of the back that you can see from the tote the quilt is stored in at the moment.
On with the show .......... photo heavy . While I'm fmq, I dont feel that confident, I just keep on. But when its all done and I look back, I think "Did I really do that?"........ always amazed.
Let's begin with some close-ups; scroll to the end for the full quilt.

ReplyDeleteJust lovely FMQ on this beautiful quilt, Kat--I have never done any fmq-ing I tried once and found it hard on my shoulders...just walking foot for me...and even wrangling larger quilts with that I am finding more difficult these days...
ReplyDeleteI think you are doing splendidly with FMQ--hugs, Julierose
Congratulations on the finish. What a stunner. I love the variety of FMQ motifs you used to compliment the piecing.

ReplyDeleteBeautifully done!!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous! Good on you to "go big or go home"!! I too love Angela's challenges and the lessons from them have solved more than a few "quilt as desired" conundrums over the years. I still have two projects that I set up for past ones that I still need to stitch up. I had hoped to do the latest one on "Negative Space" that premiered this month but it looks like I will only be able to follow along on it for now.
ReplyDeleteWow, super beautiful!!! Yes, you really did quilt it freehand and amazingly, Kat!!! Gorgeous colors, too!!!
