I have a difficult time resisting small challenges; okay some big challenges too. Connie at Freemotion By The River is hosting a monthly color challenge. She announces a color and offers directions for a block. You are open to make anything with your color; large, small, finished or not. You can share your creation in the linky party anytime during the month.
I decided to challenge myself with making placemats for gifting this year. Those quick finishes are satisfying for motivation. I've started with a placemat in shades of aqua which just happens to be near the top of my 10 favorite colors list!
Methods for making placemats should not need so much tweeking in my advanced quilting stage of life, but alas, it seems sometimes still necessary. I am not accustomed to making single fold binding. It should have been cut 1/4 inch wider and so it did not turn out perfectly. I will probably still free motion quilt in the area around the sailboat when the machine is set up for it.
In the meantime, this placemat is 12 x 18.
I'm joining these lovely linky parties this week. Please be sure to visit them to see what other creative quilters are sharing.

Love the sailboat on the side, Kat--I rarely, if ever, have used single fold binding either--i can see why you would on placemats though...hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteI do like the boat design. I made 50 placemats last year for meals on wheels. I always use a double binding.
ReplyDeleteThat sailboat is perfect for an aqua placemat! I love the variety of scraps you used. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

Placemats are such a great idea! I like the addition of the boat. Lovely colors.
ReplyDeletePlacemats are an awesome idea for this challenge, and just for any scrap busting. The sailboat placemat is really pretty.
ReplyDeleteThat's a pretty one, Kat! I like the sailboat paired with the scrappy patchwork. How big did you cut your binding? I always do single fold on small things like placemats and I cut it at 1.5 inches. I haven't finished it by machine - I always hand stitch it - so I don't know how it would work with machine stitching the last step.
ReplyDeleteI love your pretty aqua placemat with the sailboat, Kat! Great job. Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteI love this cute sailboat! Lovely placemat. Thank you for sharing and linking up. Hugs
ReplyDeleteLove it!! and I love placemats - they are so fun and can brighten up a room - so will be perfect for gifting!!
