Summer Calendar Quilt

I needed something happy and bright to display on the porch.  I chose a whimsical calendar quilt designed by Kim Schaefer.

I find applique to be an abundance of fussy work, but this pattern was my best option for the look I was aiming for.  It finished at 25 x 33.  I used lots of pieces from my scrap bins (which never seem to dwindle down).  Most of the satin stitching was done with Military Gold Glide thread.

Lavender Quarter Log Cabin

A kiddo quilt for the Hands2Help Challenge program,  giving to Ronald McDonald House.  It measures 45 x 55 and has a poly batting and fleece back.  I quilted it with Glide lavender thread.  It was so puffy I had to use the walking foot on my DSM.  It is a 3-yard quilt pattern which I adjusted to fit on my backing.  The backing is definitely prettier than it appears in the photo.

Cat Folk - Grand Finale - 2023 SAHRR

I had a grand time custom quilting the Cat Folk quilt on my Janome sit-down machine.  I didn't pre-plan the quilting but addressed each element as I worked.  It has plenty of quilting, but I didn't QITD as I am prone to do.

You may recall, I initially began with the center block coming from a pillow panel.  I thought it wouldn't appeal to most folks, (I gift most of my quilts away) so I thought it would need to be a miniature to use as a wall hanging.  Well, silly me,  it grew to 74 x 86.

I used several Accuquilt dies to help me with design elements.  The stitching down of appliques took alot of time but I love how it turned out.

I used cotton batting and a cream So Fine thread, Aqua Glide thread and a light brown Omni thread. I neglected to get a photo of the back. I used a  wide  backing from Kansas Troubles by Moda. It is now patiently waiting for me to hand stitch the binding down.  I love the colors, all from stash,  I may keep it around for awhile.

Here are some close ups of quilting.  What a unique quilt.  I love the Stay at Home Round Robin process of designing!

Hands 2 Help Challenge check-in

I worked on a couple baby quilts this week to add to my donations for the Hands 2 Help program.  These are small and made especially to fit some smaller pieces of batting and fleece backings I had.  Perfect size for an infant or on the carseat or stroller.  They are all scrappy and took all day to cut; even using a brick shape accuquilt die.  Pulling and cutting from scrappies just takes me forever.

I used my new Glide (easter palette) threads,  lavender on one and green on the other.  Love quilting with Glide.

My batch of quilts for this challenge will be taken to our local Ronald McDonald house. I have 4 finished quilts to donate now including the Gingham quilts shared on my last post.

Be sure to visit Sarah on Sunday to see all the other quilt challenger link ups.

Baby Gingham Plus Quilts

The  2023 Hands 2 Help   program has begun.  You can read all the details here with Sarah at  Confessions of a Fabric Addict. If this doesn't link to her page, you can click the icon at the top left column of my posts.

I'd like to start with a super quick and easy quilt that I made just last week.  It was cut and pieced in a short afternoon  and quilted the next day!  It only takes 3 fabrics and super quick cutting since I made my version using stripsets.

The original pattern is called Baby Gingham by Fat Quarter Shop.  You can collect the free pattern here at

I wanted to adjust the size a bit,  so I added a column of squares on the right side and the bottom.  My quilt finished at 45 x 55  which is a perfect size to fit the printed fleece I like to use for backings.  I also use a thin layer of cotton batting;  BUT  in this case, I had a piece of high loft poly that I wanted to use up, so this quilt is extra puffy.  I curved the corners a tiny bit.  You can still use cross cut binding, but you  won't have to fuss with the mitered corners.  I quilted these on my DSM with a walking foot since they were so puffy.

Actually, when I make quick quilts, I have a habit of making 2 at a time.  Here are the versions I made last week.  They are quilted with Glide threads in appropriate colors.

and here is the fleece backing.  I had enough to back both quilts.

I've added some diagrams in case you want to make your own quick quilts - Baby Gingham style !

If I've omitted anything important, please be sure to contact me for help.  My quilts will be given to the area Ronald McDonald House again this year.  I hope you are inspired to join in on this challenge too.

Q4K 23-2 and 23-3

I'm running a bit behind on my personal goal of making 2 quilts for kids each month.  Maybe I can catch up with myself.

In the meantime,  I have finished these 2 quilts for kids which each finished at 38 x 51 after quilting.  I used an extra loft poly batting (trying to use up the roll)  and my usual fleece backing.  I forgot to take a photo of the back but it is an adorable design with different kinds of puppy dogs.

Since these quilts had so much loft to them, I quilted on my DSM with the walking foot.  The kids won't mind as the fabrics are so fun and colorful.

Cat Folk - 2023 SAHRR - Round 6

I stuck it out on time for each week!  I do love this quilt, always happens when I create them using a Round Robin method.  I thought it needed to be a miniature size cuz no one would want it with this folk style cat block in the center or the colors.  Well these are some of my most favorite colors. It turned out to be an oversize lap quilt or even a twin size -  76 x 88 before quilting.  I will hang on to it for awhile before possibly gifting to a special person ( anyone who says they love it ).

I got carried away -  40 applique blocks in Round 5 had to be stitched down; then I went back and added 10 applique blocks to the centers of Round 3.  Not my usual forte but EQ got me into trouble here.

I am anxious to quilt it too.  I hope to pin baste it at our church sew day on Monday.  I have plans!  lol

Train Wreck Quilt - Grand finish!

I worked ever so hard to get this project finished by a certain date .....  a goal and a deadline is always an effective incentive for me .

I called this quilt Train Wreck ......  not because anything went wrong,  it was just the name that kept coming to mind.  So here it is ......  in all its 94 x 107 inches of glory.  I used cotton batting,  an extra wide fabric for the back, which was still not wide enough as I had to add pieces.

All my quilting is custom style, hand-guided on a Janome Versa sit-down.  I have lots of pictures cuz I tried to stitch something different in all of the elements.  It was quilted with several different shades of Omni thread and a gray Bottom Line thread in the bobbin.

I tried to get close ups of the quilting elements ........... Click on each photo to enlarge the view.
