Vintage Bloom - OMG finished

My one monthly goal OMG for December was to quilt and bind the Vintage Bloom quilt as promised here     http://scrapboxquilts.blogspot.com/2016/12/omg-vintage-blooms-last-hurrah.html.  I linked up with  Elm Street Quilts  http://www.elmstreetquilts.com/2016/12/one-monthly-goal-december-linkup.html

Now for the great finish,  this quilt is hand embroidered, machine stitched and quilted.  It measures 62 by 71.  It is a free project at sentimentalstitches.net this year.  It's hard to photograph the delicate embroidery, it didn't show up very well.

Here is the back, there is even a label.

I'm linking up with Patty at Elm Street Quilts for the December finish.  I can't wait to check out everyone else's progress.

Also linking up with Susan of Quilt Fabrication  and  Lorna of  Sew Fresh Quilts.  Visit these sites to see what other creative quilters are sharing today.

Let's ring in the new year with more fabulous quilt plans.

Design Wall Goodies

I've tried to be productive in between holiday activities.  Working on assorted projects which I plan to continue into 2017.

Here are 8 more bear paw blocks for the Mod Bear Paw quilt.  That gets me up to 20 blocks now.  You can find the pattern from the icon on the left sidebar.

Also an early start to next year's crayon quilt - a continuation of my RSC projects.

And finally block one of Be My Neighbor.  I can't count how many new starts I have jumped into  since fall.  I can only hope the new offerings for 2017 on my favorite sites  DO NOT  call to me.

I'm linking up with Connie at Freemotion By The River. where you will find more quilters sharing their projects.

Thanks so much for stopping by.

Storm at Sea - a new year beginning for 2017

We are having a "Storm at Sea" quilt-along on Cyberquilters 4-Cbees yahoo group beginning New Years holiday weekend. There is no deadline for the finish,  just a starting plan.

This week I've been fine-tuning my choice for design; then I decided to work out the cutting plan.  My quilts are getting larger than in years past.  I want them to be useful to whoever receives them.  This one is 73 x 91.  There are (48) 9 inch storm at sea blocks.

EQ quilt

This weekend I did a test block for each of the units, then spent the day cutting all the pieces.  I like the fabric combo so much.  It should make a lovely quilt!  There is hours and hours of blissful piecing ready to go..

3 "  corner squares

3 " peaky & spike

6 inch square in a square

This project won't actually start until January 1st.  Thankfully, I have lots of other ones to work on until then.

Today I'm linking up with Judy at Patchwork Times.  Visit there to see what other creative quilters are working on.

Have a great week and blessed Christmas season.  Thanks so much for stopping by.

En Provence - 2016 Bonnie Hunter Mystery

This is my first year participating in Bonnie's mystery.  I eagerly cut and sew  each step  as they are released ............  so far.

Step 1 -  make  221  4-patches with whites and creams;  initially I was going to make half the units to see if I wanted to invest this design in a full size quilt.  I made half the units,  116 actually,  then began to second guess my decision.  A dear internet friend said she had at least 50 extra to send me,  so I went and made the other fifty -- they are still waiting by the machine as 2-patches for the final seam.  Here is the first 116 ........

Step 2 - make 100 peaky and spike units; after following the video,  these worked out well using the tri rec rulers

Step 3 - make 168 4-patches.  I'm happy to read that this is the last of our 4 patches.  Here first is the scrappy pile of 2-part units.  I thought this would make the required 168.  Seems my math was challenged and I only got 96 4-patches from this pile.

Back to the cutting board .......Sunday I made another 72 4-patches.  Phew, when I look at this pile up close, I think   that's ALOT of orange.  Anxious for the other colors to tame this down.

I think I'm ready for Step 4.    Have a great week.  Thanks for stopping by.

The Over 60's - a new generation

The RSC  (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) project over at SoScrappy is addicting. Each year as summer comes to an end, I start planning ahead to the projects for  next year.
This block has been calling to me since I first saw it.   HERE it is called Fine China  by Sandy Gervais.

Here is a version made by the 'not so'  average quilter  http://averagequilter.blogspot.com/2015/10/works-in-process.html

This version spoke to me because of the added embroidery work in the center.  So I knew it was a  block with unlimited potential.  I decided to make a test block to be sure I wanted to commit to an entire quilt.

Here is my test block, done in blues, embroidery floss in blue also.  I used the embroidery as part of the quilting too, so I sandwiched the block first, then did the hand embroidery with 3 strands thru all 3 layers.  The block design of simple triangles is really stunning.  It takes 60 half square triangles at    1-1/2 inch finished and additional triangles on the corners of the center square.  This is where the "Over 60's"  comes in. The block finishes at 18 inches before sashing.

I'm doing a purple block next.  This will be one of my RSC projects for 2017.  This year I worked on 5 rainbow scrap projects and said I would not do that again;  but never say never as my list for 2017 is already growing.  I need to start sewing faster to keep up.

Today I'm linking up with Susan at Quilt Fabrication   and   Lorna of Sew Fresh Quilts.  Visit these sites to see what other quilters are sharing today.

Thanks so much for stopping by.

OMG - Vintage Blooms - a last hurrah

December already?  How could that be!  Each year flies by faster as I try to put more into it.

It's time for another One Monthly Goal.  I thought I might as well finish up what I started last month.  The Vintage Bloom quilt is so close to completed ...... sandwiched and ready for quilting.

My goal this month is to quilt it up and finish the binding, maybe even a label and be able to call it done.  It is really a lovely quilt, it will make a nice finish.

and so I'm linking up with Elm Street Quilts for One Monthly Goal for December.  Visit there to see what other quilts hope to finish this month.

Have a great month and thanks for stopping by!

Vintage Bloom - OMG - Flimsy Ready

Once I committed to a OMG, it made it easy to go work on it.   I set a goal of finishing 3 blocks, asssembly  and adding borders   HERE .

I did all that including making over 100 - 2 inch HST for another border  and  sandwiching ready for quilting.

I'm linking back up with Patty at Elm Street Quilts for OMG Finish linkup.  Visit there to see what others have accomplished this month.

THanks so much for stopping by.

Binding Tool Star

Quilt Club had a sew day yesterday. I was able to get this quilt top assembled.  It measures 64 inches square, I am thinking about adding some border -- letting that thought simmer.  It was not a good hair day, but a good sewing day, it was.

The name came from  Missouri Star Quilt Co.

Scrap Scramble (modified) - Finished

I've been struggling with an old camera that takes blurry photos and have put off showing some finished quilts .

This is my version of the Scrap Scramble project, a free BOM  offered by Carol Doak on her yahoo group a year or so ago.  I found the original layout too busy for me so I opted to use some of those blocks and added some older blocks,  tho they are all Carol Doak blocks in this quilt.

My finished version is also too busy,  I wish I put more space between the blocks,  but as it is, I'm very happy  it's done!   It measures about 70 x 80.  I hope it finds a happy home.

Vintage Blooms WIP & OMG

Today I jump on the  OMG  bandwagon.  We are nearing a new year again and I want to be a little more prepared for new starts and new goals.

So as I stumbled across this program via many internet-sharing friends, I had to reflect on which project should I commit to???

Vintage Blooms.  . . . .  I'm ready to get this one off my list.  Three more blocks to create around the center embroideries,  add borders to get this project up to the flimsy stage.  That is my goal.

This quilt is a free project this year shared by Gay at Sentimental Stitches.  You can find the patterns here:  http://sentimentalstitches.net/free-stuff/block-of-the-month-quilt-designs/vintage-blooms/

I hand embroidered the flowers with 3 strands of a gold/copper color of floss.  It's much prettier in person than my photo reflects.  Having problems with this old camera.  The blocks of triangles were exceptionally tedious.  Later Gay offered a paper piecing pattern for the block and I love paper piecing but I had already cut out all the parts for the entire top --- 30 blocks actually.  I was going to enlarge it.  After growing quite tired of making these blocks, I backed  up to the 20 block plan.

Here is what I'm working with:

I also have a page dedicated to this project.  You can see more close-ups  HERE .

So I'm joining the November Goal Setting Party found here with Patty at Elm Street Quilts.  Visit there to see what others are working on this month and get inspired to accomplish your own special goals.

Haven't shared my collection of Vintage Bloom blocks for awhile, so also linking up with Susan at Quilt Fabrication  and  Lorna at Sew Fresh Quilts.  Visit these blogs to see what other quilting friends are creating today.

Mod Bear Paw - The Beginning

This project has been knocking at my door since the day Lorna at Sew Fresh Quilts shared it with the world.  Here is the introductory post about the project. Visit this page to find the schedule and other color examples.

 https://sewfreshquilts.blogspot.com/p/modernitional-mod-bear-paw-quilt-along.html

and so this weekend it began,  so many little pieces in these 7 inch blocks and I was OCD with trying to make them just perfect.  I am using assorted browns and I have a special print for the sashing and paws.  I don't know who will inherit this one, but I hope there's someone who will LOVE IT.

I keep getting blurry pics from this old camera.  The other one broke.  Guess I'll have to get a new one with foolproof features.

RSC16 - Yellows End

I shared the crayon quilt last time.  Today I can share my design wall covered with all the yellow goodies.  Just playing around here with some alternating blocks for the scrappy churn dash WIP.  I have been making these units as leader/enders.  I go through those so quickly.

In gearing up for the finish of these RSC16 projects, I tallied my churn dash blocks.  I need to make 19 more for the initial size.  If I want to have this design be the entire queen size quilt, including drop, I need to make 115 more blocks.  Hmmm,  that sounds like it could continue through next year.

No decisions yet.  I have  the modified indian hatchet rows sewn together.  I am now pondering borders.  This is a very bright and lively quilt, it needs the proper border.  I bought a piece that is a black and white, very fine scaled tweed looking almost looks like linen.  I thought it would tone down the loudness of the top.  It does.  Just not sure if it's right for this.  So it may end up on the back if I find another border.

Okay, moving on,  I'm linking up with Angela of Soscrappy  and Cynthia for Oh Scrap  Sunday.  Visit there to see what others are creating with their scrappy leftovers.

RSC16 - Yellow Finishes

When there is a special purpose,  then great finishes are sure to follow.  I will be gifting these quilts out next weekend.  One of my RSC projects was the crayons.  I think I'll make one every year.  So in working with my yellows,  I made the crayon first (usually last), so I could get this quilt together.

I tried to get past the blurry photos, but this one was not cooperating.  It has a nice warm and white batting and backed with a colorful flannel.  It came out 40 x 54.

This next project used alot of yellow, but did not come from the scrap bins.  It measures 48 x 60.  It also has a cotton batting and a comfy fleece on the back.

RSC16 - Reds

I missed the chance to post my red scrappy projects during September.  Here is my design wall with all the red parts.  I took a short cut again and did not bring out the other components to photo with them.  Since October is my last month of color, I figure I will have to bring them out for a together photo then so I can create a plan for finishing them.

CCQ #35 - Chubby Rails

I needed to make quick work of my charity quilt for this month.  Club meeting is tomorrow and I just got it finished yesterday,  and I cut up a nice kit for someone to take home and stitch up for next month.  It is pretty butterflies, alternating with yellow and royal blue trim.  The kit has everything, cut pieces for top, batting, backing, prepared binding  and this basic project sheet.

Feel free to download a copy for yourself.

Here is my version of the quilt, 40 x 48.  I was not satisfied with  the proportion of the rails, and so I modified the dimensions in the pattern sheet.

No need to look too closely at the quilting.  I have recently ventured into free motion quilting.  I do practice everyday.  This is the first quilt I actually used it on.  I SITD along all the blocks, then swirled in the centers.  I had a difficult time moving the quilt around.  I wonder if it's because the backing is fleece?  I am using the supreme slider.  I had better control with my little practice quilt sandwiches.   I shall not abandon the FMQ ship yet.

Today I'm linking up with Lorna of Sew Fresh Quilts  and  Susan of Quilt Fabrication.  Be sure to visit these sites to see what other quilters are sharing today.

I also joined a great link-up on Friday with  TGIFF at Quilt Matters.

RSC16 - August

I have none of the color for this month, some shade of purple.  But I knew all along the last 3 colors I would need to use, light green, red and yellow.  I predict that Angela will still call these last two colors, so I did light green this month.

Again, I have piled it all together on my design wall without the energy to bring out the previous months' parts for a proper group photo.

I did the bear paw block, the sampler row, my modified indian hatchet row, crayon row, 8 scrappy churn dash blocks and 5 over-sized crumb block tops.  All this came out of the scrap bin!  Evidently, if I didn't do this challenge every month, I would need LOTS more bins.

These crumb blocks will be the beginning practice foundations for my journey into FMQ.  They will become hot pads.  I have practice sandwiches all lined up to begin FMQ ............................... TODAY.  Yes, I am nervous.  I must remember to have fun with it and do not judge.  I hope it is a positive experience and I can grow in my quilting.

I am linking up with Angela at Soscrappy.  Be sure to visit there to see what everyone else is making with their  light greens    purples.
