This pattern was created by Krista Moser as the 2024 sew along. You can still find it available HERE. I ordered her kit because there needed to be a proper blend of shades. I am not exceptionally skilled at diamond shapes but she does great video tutorials which you have to watch during the year it's released.
I began the project October 2024, cut and sewed some units, then boxed it up until after the holidays. I think it was this past summer I pushed myself to finish the top since I knew the videos would be taken down when her new qal pattern was released.
I wanted this ready to display for the Christmas Season; so I quilted it up. I thought her straight line quilting would be easy so I went that route. Well, seems my 1/4 inch lines were too close, made it stiff as a board (thankfully it will hang on the wall) and did I mention it took FOREVER to quilt.?! It only measures 51 x 57. I should have done circular petals and other free motion designs in the shapes.which would have been quicker and more fun. The fabrics are mostly batiks. I have a lot of odd shape leftover pieces for scraps but have not been inspired to create something from them yet.
I used this wide back fabric on the back called Queens Garden. I used the black fabric from the quilt background for binding. I quilted it with Glide threads in matching colors, so there were a lot of stops and starts.

ReplyDeleteFirst of all, your quilt looks AMAZING. Congratulations on finishing it just in time for Advent! I have a couple of suggestions for next time if you want to do really dense quilting again in the future without the quilt getting so stiff. First, a lighter weight thread and/or a slightly lighter weight thread in your bobbin than what you have in your needle. Something like 50 wt So Fine in the needle with 60 st Bottom Line or MagnaGlide 60 wt prewound bobbins works well for a heavily quilted quilt that needs to stay soft. If you want a heavier cotton thread in your needle for impact, you can still pair it with a lighter weight bobbin thread to reduce the stiffness. I often use King Tut 40 wt cotton in my needle with 50 wt So Fine in the bobbin and those play nicely together, too. Secondly, some battings are more likely to result in "cardboard quilt syndrome" than others, especially the ones with a scrim layer. The softest, snuggliest, most drapable batting I have ever tried (and I have tried most of them!) is Quilter's Dream Bamboo, which is a medium to light loft blend of cotton, bamboo, silk and Tencel. No matter how densely I quilt that batting, like even if I quilt the snot out of it, it has never yet turned out feeling stiff. However, as you said in your post, it's preferable for a wall hanging quilt to have more stiffness and stability so it doesn't sag and distort over time. You did a fantastic job.

ReplyDeleteWell, if it's a little stiff once hung on the wall, it won't be noticeable and will probably even be a plus for the drape. I love your quilt and these narrow quilted lines! Very modern and the eye can travel all over. Thank you for sharing your beautiful finish and linking up!
