Q4K - 23-11

I cut this kit last December for a quarter log cabin quilt, kiddo size at 46 x 56. I started with a quarter log cabin block in EQ, used the symmetry tool to get this arrangement just to be different. Finally quilted it with a pretty blue Glide thread top and bottom.   I call this quilting design  "organic".  It started out with a definite plan with a curved ruler but I ended up doing it faster free hand.  The kiddos wont mind.

here is the back...........  a fleece print with adorable puppies.  everybody loves puppies, especially me.

Koby 2 - a finish

I quilted up Koby 2 last week and stitched the binding down by machine.  I will donate it to our "For Foster Children" mission at church.  It is kinda bold colors and might appeal to a teen. I used a gray shade of Glide thread to quilt it and Bottom Line thread in the bobbin.  It finished at 46 x 60.

I will definitely be making more of these quick to cut and assemble "Koby" quilts which is a pattern from GEQuiltDesigns.com  It works great for larger prints or a collection of many prints and mixes up easily.

Christmas on Smith Mountain- part 2

Since the block parts were nicely stacked on one of my work tables, I continued to piece them together sporadically throughout the week.  I have finished the green stars and now have all my star blocks pieced.

Ready for a change ....... now there is the log courthouse step blocks to make.  I have more cutting to do to prepare for those.  Not in a huge rush as I also want to keep at machine quilting some quilts that are holding all my basting pins hostage.  I havent considered the border yet.  Too much going on right now.

This project is inspired by Smith Mountain Morning created by Bonnie Hunter.  You will find it in her book    Quiltville's Quips & Snips!!: Scraps & Shirttails II Trunkshow!

Christmas on Smith Mountain - Phase 1

So, I've started a new project and I can see it will not be a quick one and done.  It is my version of Bonnie Hunters pattern titled Smith Mountain Morning.  You will find Bonnie's post on this pattern  HERE and it is published in her book, Scraps & Shirttails II.

Although you can't tell in my photos,  my pieces are scrappy, cut from 5 different half yards each of reds, greens and silvers plus I tossed in a bright light green and a soft printed white.  I fear there will not be enough leftovers to make a border, but I do know how to remedy that.

I enjoyed using my accuquilt die cutter on this one. It makes piecing so smooth and eliminates the dreaded trimming afterward.  I did take great care to press open the seams on the pinwheel blocks.  They turned out so nice and flat.  You can see in one photo that I kept the seam ripper busy more than once.

Koby 2- flimsy

I spent some time making a second flimsy from the 24 Karat fabric collection.   There was enough to make an additional crib size.  I added 2 pieces from my stash; one was perfect, the 2nd one, not so much.  I messed up assembly a few times and spent time with the seam ripper.  Finally all together and it measured 60 x 60.  I didn't think a square quilt would be very useful,  so I unstitched one half of the section on both sides and now its back to 43 x 60 and I STILL have leftovers!!  Those are going on the back , for sure!

Nothing is sandwiched or quilted yet, maybe later this month.  Here is my second flimsy, I call Koby 2. This is a quick quilt along at GE Quilt Designs. You can get all the links to the pattern and quilt along in my first post  HERE .

24 Karat Koby

I have my 24 Karat Koby into a flimsy, 70 x 80.  It is a quick QAL with GEQuiltDesigns.  It was simple cutting and sewing.  Next time I will choose fabrics which don't require my need to scrutinize fabric placement.   I used the 24 karat collection which you can also get at GEQuiltDesigns.  It is much prettier than it appears in my indoor photo. I love the gold metallics but overall I think I will quilt it with a medium gray shade of shiny Glide thread.  I haven't decided on the quilting design yet. It is very geometric so will be looking for a design that compliments.

Stormy today and too large for DH to hold up, so had to pin it to the portable design wall to get an indoor photo. It was a fun quick project and I intend to make another one plus some in the child size.

and a couple close-ups

Perfectly Pieced Quilt Backs - New Resourse Book Release!

Today is that special day when a great new resource book is released into the quilting community.  It is the work of Kelly Young aka  MyQuiltInfatuation .   Kelly has shared all 30 backings in her blog posts so be sure to check it out.  You will not be disappointed!

I was given the opportunity to review this book and I was extremely impressed.  The detail was so inclusive with size options, cutting measurements and instruction to cover every aspect your quilt project might need.

It is so thorough and truly went beyond my expectations. It is 154 pages of information, great photos and projects and it categorizes as a resource book.

Each example covers instructions for 3 sizes of quilts and gives cutting instructions for the pieced backings that incorporate your leftovers; whether they be small scraps, large chunks or yardage pulled from stash.  The projects included are well categorized.  It is easy to find a section that covers your needs based on your size of leftovers.  All examples are beautifully photographed with complete diagrams for construction.

Would it be cheating if you selected one of these backing designs to make a great speedy quilt top too?
There are 30 choices of backing designs to choose from!

Want more?  This book also offers you 18 free downloadable quilt projects of the examples used in the book.

So,  I had to try one possibility from Perfectly Pieced Quilt Backs book to finish my Christmas Bows quilt top which had been waiting for a pieced border.  It is a design from Jordan Fabrics.

here is the top with binding partially hand-stitched down
My project is 64 x 72, a very large lap quilt.  I didn't 'quilt it to death'
this time and I love it.

Here is my backing made from the new Perfectly Pieced Quilt Back book.  The design is called "Skinny and Wide". Its on page 115.  I had several stripsets leftover from making the border for the top (really I changed my mind and did not use them).  I also pulled some stash from my neutrals box that I did not love anymore.

this is my  perfectly pieced back,  truly made in one day from stash and leftovers,
I was so pleased with the pattern and ease of construction!  Its perfect.

The Perfectly Pieced Quilt Backs book is one that you will refer to time and again.  You will love the variety of designs to pick from and all the details included in your journey.

I'm sending you directly to Kelly's blog to get your own copy of this resource.

These blogs also made a perfectly pieced quilt back of their choice from the new book.  Be sure to visit them to read what they have to share about their experience.

It's a blog-hoppy day! I'll also be joining these linky parties this week.  Be sure to visit them to see what other creative quilters are sharing.

Q4K 23-10 Flower Garden Trip

This is another donation quilt for Ronald McDonald House.  I didn't quite get it finished for the Hands2Help challenge deadline,  but it is all quilted and laundered and ready for gifting now.

It has cotton batting and a printed fleece back.  I quilted it with Watermelon Glide thread on my sit-down Janome Versa 18.  It finished at 48 x 57.  I quilted an all over orange peel design.

and here is the back........... it looks prettier in person
